Gynecology is a branch of medicine in which the physician specializes in the functions and diseases specific to females, especially those affecting the reproductive system. Gynecologists provide preventative care, diagnose any disorders related to the female reproductive system, and create a treatment plan.

Here are the most common procedures a gynecologist may perform at Memorial Hermann Surgery Center The Woodlands:

Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery, sometimes called keyhole surgery, is a minimally invasive surgical technique that allows surgeons to operate through small incisions in the body. The advantage of this technique is that it speeds recovery time, minimizes scarring, and results in less pain. This technique is used in many procedures including those for rectal prolapse, diverticulitis, cancer, gall bladder removal, and gynecology surgeries.

Hysteroscopy

A hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows the physician to look inside the uterus to diagnose and treat causes of abnormal bleeding. The gynecologist may take a tissue sample for a biopsy, remove polyps or fibroid tumors, or stop bleeding by destroying tissue using freezing, heat, chemicals, or electric current. It’s possible to have the hysteroscopy done in the doctor’s office or at an outpatient center.

Fibroid, Cyst Removal

Women who have ovarian cysts or uterine fibroids may need a procedure to remove them. Ovarian cysts are cavities inside the ovary that contain fluids. This can be done laparoscopically in which the surgeon makes tiny incisions and inserts a camera mounted on a thin tube so the surgeon can see the ovaries and remove them.

Fibroids, on the other hand, are non-cancerous tumors in the uterus. Usually, they don’t need treatment. But if the fibroids need removing, there are a few non-invasive treatment options. The recommended procedure depends on the patient’s case. Options include uterine artery embolization, radiofrequency ablation, laparoscopic myomectomy, hysteroscopic myomectomy, and endometrial ablation.
